Authentic Suiti and Livi Cultural Spaces in Latvia
What do you know about the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in Latvia
A group of four international students – Dilnoza, Greta, Jana, Alexander – are having a lively conversation at a university café. They seem very worried.
Anna, a local student, approaches them and asks: “Hi, guys! What’s the matter? You seem quite worried. Can I help you?”
Dilnoza: “Maybe…, we really need some help. We have to do a project work – make a presentation on UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in Latvia, but we have no idea what it means”.
Anna: “Oh, that’s not a problem at all. Let’s go to the library and we will sort it out!”
[In the library] Anna: “Now, first we have to find out some basic information on the UNESCO webpage. Next, we …”
To learn what happens next and how the students succeed, do the tasks below; they are all interconnected.
- Part 1. Roll up your sleeves!
Part 1. Roll up your sleeves!
Greta: “Thank you, Anna, you helped us a lot! Now we understand what cultural heritage is and we can start working on our project”.
Jana: “And what is more, I really liked the interactive space created by UNESCO. It contains so much useful and unknown information in one place!”
Dilnoza: “That’s true! I did not know all this information about my home country Uzbekistan, not to say anything about Europe”.
Anna: “Very well, and if you need my help, just look for me at the Students’ Council.”
Alexander: “Fine, thanks! Well, what shall we do next? What about a quick brainstorming session?”
- Part 2. What can the Suiti and Līvi offer?
Part 2. What can the Suiti and Līvi offer?
The students have split into pairs and each pair has selected to work on one of the intangible heritage values of Latvia. Jana and Greta have decided to find information about the Suiti cultural space, Dilnoza and Alexander will research information about the Līvi cultural space. They agree to meet at the University library in a week’s time and share their findings.Do the tasks below and find out what they have discovered.
- Part 3. It is time to show friends around
Part 3. It is time to show friends around
As agreed, the students meet at the library to discuss their success. They exchange their findings and decide that they have discovered many things and now they can make the presentation required. They are proceeding to the library and on their way they meet Anna. And this time Anna is worried.
Alexander: “Hi, Anna! We want to thank you for your great suggestions. We are ready to finish our project work.”
Anna: “Hi, guys! That’s nice”.
Jana: “What’s the matter, Anna? You seem so worried.”
Anna: “This time I have a problem. A group of Lithuanian students is visiting us and we have to arrange them a two-day excursion around Latvia, but this is a problem for the Students’ Council as Lithuanians are our frequent guests and they have seen nearly everything we can offer”.
Dilnoza: “Don’t worry! We will help you. We have learnt so many interesting facts about the Suiti and Livonian cultural spaces that we can create this tour for your guests. No problem at all.”
Anna: “Thanks, indeed. That is very helpful”
To see how our friends have solved the situation do the tasks below.
- It is time to present the project
It is time to present the project
Two weeks after their first meeting at a university café, Anna meets the students again there. This time they seem satisfied and relaxed.
Anna approaches them and asks: “Hi! Thanks for the excursion organised for our Lithuanian friends. They enjoyed it. And how are you succeeding with your project work?”
Alexander:” Very well, thank you! We managed to do the task and we learnt a lot of useful things. Come to our class tomorrow and have a look at our presentation. It will be tomorrow morning at 9.00, Room 410”.
Anna: “Thanks for inviting me! I will definitely come and support you”.
Now help the students create their presentation on the Suiti and/or Livonian cultural space. You can use the material learnt during this module.
